Development Director
REPORTS TO: Executive Director
POSITION OVERVIEW: Responsibilities include developing individual donor, planned giving, special event and corporate partnership development. Position is based at the national headquarters in Baltimore. MD. Minimum requirements include bachelor's degree, five years of progressive experience in program and fundraising and demonstrated ability to work with a broad spectrum of donors and volunteers.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Formulates short-term plans and long-range goals for First Candle's fundraising program. Develops detailed work plans for soliciting: direct mail, major gifts, special events, planned giving, corporate contributions, corporate partnerships/strategic alliances. Recruits volunteers and corporate partners to participate in First Candle fundraising programs. Develops detailed budgets/business plan for each fundraising activity. Organizes resources necessary to execute plans for solicitation in the above areas. Provides interim and final reports on each fundraising activity. Increase First Candle's visibility and participation in workplace giving programs. Offers fundraising advice and guidance, upon request, to First Candle members. Promotes and enhances First Candle's image with other organizations, the media and the general public. Identifies and develops public information/marketing/fundraising opportunities for First Candle based on contemporary news events. Furnishes the organization with contemporary fundraising knowledge and practices.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Experience: Five years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising and marketing in a nonprofit environment. Broad-based documented experience in multiple fundraising approaches. Successful history of soliciting contributions and “closing” gifts. Experience in proposal research and development.
Education: Bachelors degree in business, communications, marketing, public relations or related field.
Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of effective principles and practices of fund raising, public relations, media relations, communications and marketing. Demonstrated knowledge of management functions including budgeting, financial reporting and nonprofit accounting practices. Proven ability to work with broad spectrum of donors, volunteers and staff.
Compensation: Commensurate with experience
Travel Required: Approximately 25 percent
